Why does scanning sometimes fail?
If your NFC Product works on some attempts but not others, the phone’s position or settings may be affecting the scan. NFC works at close range, and the location of the phone’s NFC reader varies by model.
Try the checks below before changing the link saved on your product.
1. Adjust the phone’s position
Hold the phone close to your NFC Product and move it slowly until it detects the tag.
-
On iPhone: Try positioning the top of the phone near the tag.
-
On Android: Try the back of the phone. The reader’s location varies, so check your model’s guidance if needed.
Hold the phone steady briefly instead of quickly swiping it across the product. A missed scan may simply mean the phone’s reader was not aligned with the tag.
2. Wake and unlock the phone
Turn on the screen and unlock the phone before trying again. This provides a consistent starting point when troubleshooting, since scanning behavior can vary by device and its current state.
On supported iPhones, automatic NFC reading can be unavailable while the camera or Apple Pay is in use, in Airplane Mode, or before the first unlock after restarting. Close the camera or payment screen, turn off Airplane Mode, and try again.
3. Check that NFC is enabled
On Android, search for “NFC” in Settings and make sure it is switched on. If the setting is unavailable, check the manufacturer’s specifications to confirm that your model supports NFC tag reading.
Supported iPhones handle background NFC reading automatically. There is no equivalent NFC switch you need to enable for this feature.
4. Confirm that the phone is compatible
Not every smartphone supports the same NFC features. iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and later models support background tag reading. Older iPhones may require a manual reader or compatible app.
Android support varies by model. A phone being recently purchased does not, by itself, confirm NFC compatibility.
5. Try another compatible phone
Test your NFC Product with another phone that supports NFC tag reading.
If it works consistently on the second phone, the first phone’s settings or scanning position may need attention. If neither phone detects it, contact us for help investigating.
What if the phone detects the tag but the page does not open?
A notification or link appearing means the phone has read the tag. Tap the notification if prompted.
If the page then fails to load, check the phone’s internet connection and the saved URL. If Google asks you to sign in, complete that step to continue to the review page.
